My Grand Turk vacation
Every year a family vacation is planned to enjoy one of our beautiful islands. This year's choice was Grand Turk and Salt Cay. Although we reside on the main island called Providenciales, we look forward to our getaway time to explore the historical sites and adventures of the other islands.
A wonderful time was had with our group of 12. When visiting Grand Turk you should add these activities to your to-do list.
- Osprey Beach Hotel - this hotel is located on the beach, and within walking distance to the famous Front Stree of Grand Turk. There were ample rooms to accommodate the large group and offered a relaxing atmosphere. Although a pool is located on the property we spend most of the time on the beach, enjoying the calm turquoise waters and white sands.
- The Light House - An historic site on the island situated on THE RIDGE. The Lighthouse was built in 1852 and is one of the most famous landmarks on the island. Although not currently in operation, it was used in the 19th century to aid in ship navigation, and prevent shipwrecks.- Front Street - Home to many Bermudian Style buildings, and the National Museum. This area is going to be turned into a tourist attraction area in the near further, in order to preserve its historical value. Front Street runs parallel to the beach and is also home to small Inns and hotels.
- Hon. JAGS McCartney Memorial - The James Alexander George Smith McCartney memorial site is a must-visit. Hon. JAGS was the first Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He died in a plane crash over New Jersey on 9th May 1980. Every year there is a wreath-laying ceremony in his honor.
- Governors Beach - Although there are many attractive beaches in Grand Turk, Governor's beach is perfect for families, or couples just wishing to relax. There are shaded areas and fully function facilities. Paved parking as well. (Blog Photo is of Governor's beach). Residents consider this the best beach on the island, it is frequented by many during holidays. Our visit during the week was super as we had the beach to ourselves. It was the highlight of the day. Check out what Visit TCI has to say about Governor's beach by clicking here.
- Local Museum - I'm not sure the correct heading but we found this unique building on Grand Turk, just near the end of Front Street. I call it the local museum because it comprises painted artwork contributed by the local residents. These masterpieces comprise renderings of our National Heroe Hon. JAGS McCartney, our national symbols etc. Not only was my family attracted to the art walls, but also other tourists admiring the work.
- Sandbar - We were craving some local food and good seafood. The Sandbar was the right choice. There was freshly prepared crack conch, and fish, plus comfort food like burgers for the kids who wanted something simple. The location on the beach makes it even better because you can make a family day out of it as the kids enjoy the beach after eating if you like. Great food, and wonderful ambiance. Our trip comprised of other adventures, like fishing etc. but I can't share all of the secrets all at once. The only thing I did not get to do was take a boat trip and go to Gibbs Cay and Diving because my good friend Mr. Ed Forbes from Exclusive Escapes was fully booked, and also the Cruise Port was closed because of the covid restrictions. The Cruise Port should be opened again in October of 2021 hopefully, this is another must-experience outing on Grand Turk.
