Things to do in South Caicos

South Caicos is one of the inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos Island chain. The BIG South as the island is called, is known for its fishing both bonefishing and deep-sea fishing. Also, it is a great scuba diving destination. There is a school for marine studies and diving within the island that has been successful. For more information check out their website https://fieldstudies.org/centers/tci/.

I had the privilege of spending two days in South Caicos recently. Just taking time out, to visit and experience the local lifestyle and see what the island has to offer.

My adventures

I have always heard about the salt ponds of the islands. I took the time to walk the ponds, and view the boiling hole. Hearing about the boiling hole and seeing it firsthand is a different experience. I was elated to see firsthand a part of history. Did you know that the boiling hole is a naturally formed underwater passage that connects the pond to the ocean? This formation was taken advantage of by those working the ponds, to feed water into the salt ponds which eventually was evaporated. The history of salt making in the TCI is quite interesting. I believe that this industry is still able to be revived.

While at the Ponds there were many extra pink Flamingoes. A picturesque moment.

I visited the Luxury Sail Rock Resort, then continued by driving to the US Cost Guard Naval Base, which is along the furthest end of the Peninsula.  Although quite a distance, the drive was worth it. Along the way, there are many small private beach coves that are great for picnicking. Check out Mr. Charles A. Blieley recollection of his Life as a US Coast Guardsman which includes photos as well. Click here. I also enjoyed a breathtaking sunset while at the point. I picked the best time to visit.

Dining/Accommodation

I choose to book at the Ocean and Beach Resort which has one of the most beautiful ridge views on the island. Elevated, and with a view of Long Cay and Ambrigrise Cay in the distance. Owned and operated by one of the prominent South Caicos families. Although Ocean and Beach Resort has amenities such as a pool and restaurant on-site, since I was in South Caicos for a short time and wanted to explore everything, I decided to have breakfast and lunch at the East Bay Resort, for a change in scenery. Both properties are within walking distance of each other so it was convenient.

I found it quite easy to navigate around the island. It is best to rent a car so that you can go off the beaten paths of the island and enjoy the scenes. South Caicos has a rustic charm to it. I am looking forward to spending a few more days there soon.
